In the early hours on June 16th, attendees of the Southwest Detroit Business Associations Community Investment Breakfast Presented by Motor City Casino Hotel’s Sound Board started filing in. Attendees wasted no time before breakfast was served to take advantage of the many networking opportunities as well as catching up with colleagues and friends.
As people began to find their seats, a warm welcome was given by the Emcee of the event, Lead Anchor, Fox 2 Detroit WJBK Huel Perkins. After a blessing from Pastor Kevin Casillas, Board Chair Michael Odom gave a heartfelt greeting to the attendees. President Kathy Wendler introduced a video recapping the theme of the event, Southwest Detroit’s Resurgence. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans delivered to his keynote address to the attendees.
Mrs. Wendler and Mr. Odom stood side by side to give out the Pewabic Pottery created awards to members of the community that aid in Southwest Detroit’s Resurgence. The Bagley Award for Generational Investment was given to John & Lorron James of The James Group. The Clark Street Award for Civic Investment was given to Bank of America, and The Spirit of Southwest Detroit award was given to Michigan Department of Transportation and Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. Jose and Sandra Lopez of Mi Pueblo received The Springwells Award for Small Business Investment. The Motor City Match program received The West Vernor Award for Community Leadership. Finally, Maria Salinas from Congress of Communities was given The Kathy Wendler Award.
